Channel 16 interference

Subject: Channel 16 interference
Maxum Model: 4600LE
I am receiving electrical interference on CHANNEL 16 (Channel 16 only) on my Raytheon 220 VHF when I turn on the accessory switch which powers up the autopilot and tridata.
VHF antenna is a 8' Shakespeare Galaxy Eliminator. Reception is fine if accessory switch is turned off. I've tried moving the antenna and transducer cables as far apart as possible, as well as changing accessory switches without success. Dealer has suggested a noise filter.
Has anyone experienced this type of problem? Is there any downside associated with using a noise filter? Would appreciate any input. Sincerely, Ken
Noise filters are pretty cheep Ken, I would try (2) one on the VHF which takes less than 5 amps, and one on the auto pilot. The auto pilot will need one that will take about 20 amps. James
I noticed that the surround sound from the TV did not work. Simple...Maxum just didn't bother to run any audio cables to the amplifier. Then a realized that I have never heard the subwoofer. It is located under the dinette seat. The cushion has to be removed to get to it. I found that there is a switch on the subwoofer that has to be turned on anytime that you want it to function. Not a good arrangement. There is a switched outlet on the amplifier, so I ran a new cable from the switched outlet to the subwoofer. It now comes on with the amp. Autopilot's: I have followed Maxum and had a Raytheon Auto Pilot installed. I took pictures of the installation while at the Maxum plant in Salisbury, MD. While touring the plant I was able to talk to the technicians who were installing the autopilot system on the line. They were very nice and explained the installation in great detail. The problem with an "aftermarket installation" as they say, is the mounting of the Flux Gate Compass and running of the Flux Gate Compass's wiring. They, (Maxum) locates it low in the center of the boat away from the machinery. Rightfully so, my installer said he could mount it to the far left side of the bridge on our 4600 SCB.

I was skeptical, but he was 100% right. We have run over 100 miles in a straight line, no problems. We installed just what the factory installs when you buy their package, a Raytheon 6000+, a type 1 drive unit, and a type 100 computer (core pack). There was some question from our installer about the type 1 drive being too small, but that is what Maxum installs, and Raytheon specified it to Maxum for our boats. They seem to be right. It was explained to me that the Maxum boats have a high efficiency rudder and the type 1 pump can feed the hydraulic ram just fine, I fully agree. Questions, BilleGates@aol.com
Raytheon Tridata: Our Raytheon Tridata would work only marginally in fresh water and only at very slow speeds in salt water. I called Raytheon and they suggested I replace the display unit. They offered to "Cross Ship" me a unit at no charge, I installed the new one and sent them back the defective unit. It was painless, thank you Raytheon for standing behind your equipment. JC 9/00
R Vlick, has a 4100 SCR and installed a Robertson Autopilot, AP20, with J300X Junction Box, RF300 Rudder Feedback Controller, RFC35R Flux Gate Compass, and RPU 160 Pump. Questions?

Auto Tracking Mini Satellite System, we installed a Sharp Trac-2000, on our 4600 SCB, we mounted it on the outboard of the fiberglass arch (opposite side to the TV antenna). We had a custom made SS radar arch built so that the Satellite antenna does not interfere with the Radar. 3 years of trouble free operation. For information call Sharp Products @ 1-800-213-2211 www.seasharp.com

Sharp Trac-2000 DSS Satellite TV on a 4600 SCB
KVH TrackVision 4 Satellite System, two photos below, we installed a TrackVision 4 on our 3500 SCR. We had a custom bracket made to hold both our Raytheon Raydome and the satellite system (front to back) and mounted it in the center of the radar arch. So far there has been no interference between the radar and the satellite system and the system has worked flawlessly under all conditions. Questions? mailto:Stacy.conkin@veritas.com

Here is a plug for a company that for the past 4 years, has had the best prices at, and away from the boat shows. Consumers Marine Electronics, 800-332-2628.
