Cold Weather Diesel Starting:
Diesel Wiring Troubleshooting:
As the owner of a Maxum 41 ft. I have sought to keep my boat and it engine in the best shape. There are two elements that are always against you: Money and Time.
Many of the features that are incorporated in our boats (the outboard things like filters on the starboard engine, the water pump on the port engine, EMC and its components and the starter on the starboard engine) are hard to reach.
If you have alot of money you can have a service man do the work, (but in doing so you miss the joys of speaking in tongues while placing your body in a space that no human body should go.)
This month I would like to talk about a Problem that I encountered near the end of the boating season and some of the solutions I found.
The pre heat light did not come on when the ignition was turned on.
Did the bulb burn out?
Did a wire come loose?
Did one of the relays burn out?
Did the EMC quit? ($800.) (Did you know about the 10 amp fuse on the port engine harness block?)
Did the heater quit?
I have enclosed two pages of the Diagrams that will help you understand the many components of this system for B and C Cummings engines.
The engine that powers your boat suffer considerable damage when they are operated with col-thickened oil. Popular all season engine oils typically have a pour point of 25 F. Basically speaking, below that temperature the oil becomes too thick to flow
Another factor you should consider during cold weather operations, these same oils reach their rated Borderline Pumping Temperatures at about 2 F. Pumpabilty becomes questionable.
Execessive time is required to build oil pressure in an engine. This time to pressure gap can often exceed 30 seconds.
Operating an engine without immediate oil flow is the major factor affecting its service life. Further, an unheated engine produces harmful exhaust emissions. When engine oil is preheated to near its normal operating level, heat rise off this oil and the important internal moving parts are cushion. The results are a substantial reduction in cold cushion related drag (rotational resistance). The engine enjoys improved Carnkability with higher crankshaft speed during the start up.
Page three is a product that I am planning to use in place of the Cummings Heat Air System.
Thanks to Seaboard Marine / Tony Athens and Kevin Frank, Wolverine Engine Heaters for their technical advice and help.

Can you improve the starting of your Cummins engine?
Can modern science save you money?
Now you can Eliminate Cold Starts and close to 90% of White Smoke.
Attach Wolverine to your oil pan, and never again worry about cold starts. Wolverine puts heat where it counts -- IN THE OIL -- for improved crankability in the most frigid weather. For many applications, this type of heater is the only practical choice.
Unlike block, dip-stick or other types of engine heaters, these heaters evenly spreads heat throughout the engine from the bottom up, heating the oil to near operating temperature
WHAT IS IT?
A revolutionary new kind of Engine Preheater designed to heat the important areas of the engine beginning with its oil supply. Remember -- Heat Rises.
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
A thin, flexible, very durable silicone mat/pad built to conform to the bottom of an oil pan.
HOW IS IT INSTALLED?
It is bonded with a silicone adhesive to the bottom outside surface of an engine's oil pan
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Heat generated is transferred into the oil pan structure to provide a thorough, gentle, even Heating of the oil supply. The heat then rises to warm important internal engine components. Seaboard calls this "soft heat."
WHAT DOES IT DO FOR AN ENGINE?
- IMPROVES crankability in the coldest weather, and reduces white smoke.
REDUCES cold start-up wear.
REDUCESwater and acid accumulation in the oil supply.
THE WOLVERINE ADVANTAGE:
- Provides immediate lubrication
- Virtually eliminates cold-start wear
- Uses in military and government applications
- Heats internal components more thoroughly than other heaters
- Exclusive three-year limited warranty protects your investment.
WHY IS NO MAINTENANCE REQUIRED?
Wolverine Heaters do not suffer the costly element failure common to immersion type heaters.
HOW DOES IT SAVE ME MONEY?
The Wolverine SAVES MONEY by increasing engine life. It is maintenance free. Wolverine Heaters offer superior preheating at reduced electrical cost.
Added notes: RON,
PERHAPS MENTION THAT WOLVERINE VIRTUALLY ELIMINATES "START-UP SMOKE"
WHICH IS GREATLY APPRECIATED BY THE HARBOR MASTER! AND PERHAPS MENTION

4600 SCB in Distress!
Help to the Rescue
MAXUM 4600 damage during "Wilma"
Well, Steve and I talked, and I offered the use of my 4600 SCB to make his molds.
My boat was in inside heated storage, @ Winter Harbor, just above Syracuse, NY on the Erie Canal.
My only stipulation was that the Winter Harbor staff had to do the work making the molds.
I knew them and trusted them. Well, it turned out that Jim from Winter Harbor flew down to Florida,
and surveyed the damage personally, they bid on the repair and in the photos below, you can see the new
molds ready to be packed into their 40' trailer and with a crew of seven, will drive to Florida to install the molds
and make the boat whole again. With all the damage to boats in Florida and the gulf, there are nowhere near
enough craftsmen to go around. And without this exceptional effort, Sea Sleigh might be high and dry for well
over a year awaiting repairs.

The attached photo's are of the mold process for Sea Sleigh- being taken form Jim Clausen's, "Summer School"
All the Winter Harbor Elves are working very hard to pack the sleigh and be on there way....
Much to do and lists to check! We will keep you posted of our progress!
Reverse molds are taken from our 4600 SCB, Summer School.
Trimming the mold.
Molds await reinforcement.
Looking good!
Excellent pickup of the non skid detail!
Wishing you all a healthy and joyous holiday season...
Sincerely, Leslie,
