When the US Coast Guard rates your vessel in "TONS" and further rates your ability to Captain a vessel for hire by stating on you license how many tons of vessel you are qualified to operate, what does this all mean? Lets start with the word Ton, it comes from the old English word, "tun" meaning barrel. The measurement of a ton was originally used by the English and French, to rate ships as to how many barrels they could carry. This formula originally was contrived by a formula using the vessels overall length, width and depth. Variations, of hull design have lead to more accurate measurement, and rules about what spaces of the ship to actually measure, but rating of vessels today still include a interesting blend of the old and the new system. A ton, was originally rated at approximately 100 cubic feet. As measurement systems, and mathematics grew, so did the accuracy of the measurement of the volume of a ship. Today, Gross Tons and Net Tons are used as measurements of volume, not weight. And the term "Displacement Ton" is used as a measure of weight, not volume. And when is a ton, not a ton? Well a long ton is 2240lbs, a short ton 2000lbs, and a metric ton 2204.62lbs. Now, I hope that clear, can someone explain it to me?

330-370B and 450C series Cummins Diesels
I have a great deal of Cummins Marine Diesel Information to share with everyone. As you may know, the new mandated emission standards for Marine Diesel Engines will soon be here. Our 330-370B and 450C series Cummins Diesels will cease being production engines. But not to fear, parts will remain available, as well as rebuilt engines. Current pricing for rebuilt engines are approximately, $11,500 for a 370B, and $15,000. for a 450C. Just FYI, rebuilt engines use the head, block, crank, and intercooler casting. Just about everything else is new, yes a warranty from Cummins is included. Rebuilt engines are currently "built up" in Mexico and are in stock.
Just a few Cummins Diesel engines waiting for their boats.

24 Valve B and C series
Replacement Diesels
Yes, the new engines are here. The engine mount bolt pattern is the same as the older B and C series engines, but there are quite a few changes to point out. First, in the event of a catastrophic engine failure, (rod through the block), your first choice should be a rebuilt engine from Cummins. But to make that decision you need to talk to your local Cummins re-power specialist, located at your local Cummins regional distributor, to convince yourself of your best option. Everyone wants the newest and shiniest engines. And the new Cummins engines are all that, in 2001-2 Cummins started using Dupont Imron paint on their engines. The new B&C's use a 24 valve common rail fuel injection system. Filters are mounter on the front and back of the engines for universal access.
Heres the new 24 valve C. series engine.
Injector pressures are hugely different on the new engines. The bosch fuel pump on the current B & C series engines, put out 3,000 to 3,500 psi of pressure to "pop" each injectors @ 290 bar, and spray the fuel into the engine. At 3,000 to 3,500 psi, a micro thin line of fuel escaping from the injector assembly can pierce the skin. New 24 valve common rail engine fuel pumps are putting out 26,000 psi! This is enough to cut straight through your finger, yes cut right through leaving two distinct very confused sides, and so identifying the area of the fuel leak with blood. Fuel timing is electronic, and puts a small amount of fuel into the cylinder to act as a ignition source for the second power stroke spray. While these engines are "extremely" quiet at idle and low rpm, they do make the same racket as the original B & C series engines at WOT.
Power ratings:
The new engines will be built the same. This confusing statement I know, which I will now try to explain.
Lets talk B series. The new designation is QSB, and the ratings today are 305, 355, and 380 hp. Every part on these engines is the same on all of these hp ratings. The only change is in the computers, and that is done by downloading the software for that hp rating into the computer. The computer logs the user doing the change into the onboard computer. While the software change is cheep, you will be paying thousands of dollars more just for the hp you are getting. Remember more hp means lower engine life and more warranty failures. That's where your $ are going. The QSB is a pretty rough engine, there's talk that a government agency is getting 800 hp versions. But the life of the engine is only ratd @ 400 hours, for 800 hp. Expect to see another version of the QSB come out in 2005 at about 420 hp.

Fuel Solenoid:
Here is 450C's Fuel Solenoid. The Fuel Solenoid in the center of the photo and has a black tie wrap around the electrical connection. When you turn on the key the Fuel Solenoid energizes and allows fuel to flow. Turn off the key and the solenoid disengages and the engine stops. Here a bit more information on how the Fuel Solenoid works. It has (2) coils, one is the "make coil", it is used to energize the plunger inside and pull the fuel vale open, this coil takes 30 amps of power. And then there is the "hold down", or "hold in" coil, it only requires 8 amps. 30 amps to make, 8 amps to hold. If the make coil gets hung up, or is supplied with low current it could burn up. In fact it will burn up in about 45 seconds unless the hold down coil get energized. You can usually "see" the burn mark where the coils wires leave the top of the solenoid. But don't despair. If your Fuel Solenoids make coil burns up, you can still usually start and stop your engine. Heres how. Turn on the key, manually lift the fuel Solenoids plunger and the "hold coil" will keep it in place. Key off, it drops out.

The C series Intercooler Turbo:
Turbos only last so long, and when they die they get tossed away, there is no returned core on this part from Cummins. It's new or nothing, and for a new C series intercooler turbo you will be shelling out $ 1,500.00 as a customer. Turbos wear down, their internal clearances increase and their efficiency is reduced. Broken turbo blades and ceased bearings don't help either. (The aftercooler turbo is a touch over $2,000.00)

Smart Craft
Electronic Computer Control:
New B & C series engines will be computer controlled, and will use Mercury's Smart Craft Control bus. But don't expect to see the Mercury name or the Smart Craft name. Expect different labeling but the same controls, instruments, throttles and computer software to adjust and diagnose the system.
Mercury's SmartCraft technology is compatible with NMEA 2000 interfact standards established by the National Marine Electronics Association, provides boat owners with important information including boat speed, oil temperature and pressure, engine coolant pressure and temperature, fuel levels, degrees of engine trim, steering angles, water depth and engine hours of usage, the company said.
Mercury plans to add to its SmartCraft electronic arsenal a special unversal serial bus (USB) product that will allow computer-based products to interface with the SmartCraft system. Also available from SmartCraft will be integration with computer-based navigation software, the company said.
One of the best features of electronic control systems will be that the diagnostics/prognostics alerts provide both warnings of impending problems, and a description of what is wrong.

I am told the B series engines also have a similar manual available.
I know it's not new , but its the first time i've seen it.
